The questions are eternal but the answers ever changing…about our jeans. Should I keep jeans I love but are too small? (Maybe one pair.) What width are we wearing these days? What wash is in?!? How many pair do I actually need? What should I wear to dinner?

Not to droll on, but it was raining on Friday and I was trying to get dressed - casually enough to feel comfortable, but presentable enough for the two market appointments I had scheduled that day. The rain had me craving jeans and sneakers, but I didn’t want to look too “off duty.” Which got me thinking. I don’t need a huge stack of basic jeans. I need one or two that do that, and the rest should serve an occasion or support my style goals.

All of our jeans should serve a purpose. If not, the accumulation of denim can cloud our fashion sensibilities. They’re too easy to collect (and throw on) so therefore we must be extremely considerate of what we allow in and to stay. I find it helpful to step back and ponder: Where am I going in these jeans? How would I feel running into so-and-so in them? How do I feel during the “getting dressed” process? Am I happy in these 30 minutes after leaving the house? I find giving jeans the same mental consideration that I would give black pants or a skirt helpful in keeping my edit and style sense in check.

Since the mood is generally warm enough (in temperature or vibe or both) to start breaking out sandals (long jeans, which happen to be the style du jour, are best paired with bare toes) it is time to talk about where we are at in our relationship with denim.

I’ve ordered, reordered (sized up, sized down!), returned, cut, hemmed and come up with an edit that feels complete for our times (well today at least!) The edit, and how I got here is our journey today, broken down into five categories. Given that we are practically to Memorial Day, we will start with white. LOL, there are no rules, wear your whites year round!!! But still…we are starting there. Let’s go.

Choosing a jean size…in WHITE!
