without sounding like a complete debbie downer, it's ironic that designers want to sell us outerwear and coats as the world continues to warm. as much as i adore all the beautiful things and the creativity that goes into it, capitalism is the cause of climate change. what happened to the designers who were bucking the unsustainable pace of constant production? should we really be thinking about the new coat we are going to buy for next winter (if it even comes) before we've placed a toe over the spring equinox?
Amazing reviews! I’m excited about out all the mid century nostalgia, my fav era. Looking forward to seeing styling suggestions for some of these ideas come fall.
That introduction hit home with a wide splash. The extreme times we either are living or approaching (depending where you are in the world). And designers are aware of it I think: by keeping going back in time in some gimmicks, or by expressing the world wide instability in a myriad of proportions in one look or a show. I think. Loved the perspectives.
Wow some of those looks were really out there. 100% agree that the Bally is to die for. That blue leather? dress? And the skirt on the lower left? Delicious! And the Gucci jacket is YUMMY!
It is a goal of mine in life to attend a fashion show IRL but you made me feel (kind of) like I was there, Becky! Thank you! And FWIW my Mackintosh came and it is a dream. Casual and just enough oversized to be an easy raincoat to throw on and look put together over a sweater and jeans. It reads casual to me with the contrast stitching but if it is a literal downpour hopefully no one will hold it against me if I wear it with a skirt; lol!
I loved that Miu Miu showed some real women! Emma Thompson is a shining star, and Dr. Huilan is LIFE GOALS!! I wish more designers would do this - it is much more interesting than a parade of models that look nothing like me or anyone I know.
“Maybe they’ve all been reading 5 Things and realize we are just going to buy our sweaters at Uniqlo and invest in a stellar statement piece come winter. LOL!” I think this hits the nail on the head. Most high-end designers are designing for lives people don’t live anymore - the shows people like are showing realistic, wearable clothes that meet people’s actual lifestyles in 2024, while other shows are just expensive, performative art at this point (except for maybe the 1% who can afford it).
Thank you Becky, this was a fantastic review. The way you write is warm, inviting, thoughtful and informative. Like your telling a friend about the shows. How fun it must be to go to multiple shows. 💖
I’m also noticing a theme in both shows and on the red carpet yesterday: black and white outfits are everywhere, with lots of rich textures (think I saw at least 4 black velvet gowns at the Oscars?!). Would love to hear your thoughts on Oscars fashion and if/how it correlates with what we’ve seen coming for fall!
What does it say about me that the main thing I took away from this is that I need a $40 pencil 😂

I think you mean reconcile, not rectify. ;)

Thanks a lot for this great review! ❤️

Becky, I'm 5'6" and 135. Would you get the p/s or the m/l in the Theory coat? I'm normally a size 4 and AA chested with long arms.
What a great, real, and fun recap! Truly made my Monday morning.
I’m size 4 and 5 7 - will P/S be too small?
