If you see me, I’ll be wearing this! FDL shirt (five other greats at the bottom) Blaze jeans, Grenson fisherladies.
I’ve reached sweater fatigue. The failsafe uniform of cute pants, sweater, coat is no longer feeling like an ace in the mornings. My grey/tan/black trifecta of cashmere is looking sad in the corner of my room and a little worse for wear. Plus, the sun is starting to come out (I hear its full on summer in LA!) and the spring break itch is itchy. Lately, the piece I can’t seem to quit has been a flannel (or flannel-esque shirt.) I’m not quite ready for poplin - too crisp and cold on the skin…high of 60 is not actually spring, just spring in training - and the sweaters are begging for a break.
Enter the flannel in light, springy colors. I’ve been rotating two of them, to be exact. A denim-y blue plaid and a tan solid. And they’ve taken me from birthday parties to pitch meetings to parties (well I haven’t actually worn them to a party yet but if someone would like to invite me to one, I’ll definitely show up in one of the dressier outfits below.) At the end of the day they are still the workhorses that my four-hats (figuratively) lifestyle needs: soft, warm, washable and an effortlessly cool way to ease out of the winter uniform.
So welcome back to my closet! It’s been a minute since we had a session where I empty the entire contents of my dresser on my bed. Couldn’t stop making outfits this week. So many that I couldn’t even fit them all here…but this well rounded (IMO) edit gives you the picture below. Shall we?
Wore this silky pant (in leu of sweatpants) to a toddler bike date on the Great Lawn last weekend. I felt like I aced weekend dressing in it, and got rave mom reviews too. So felt it was a good place for us to start. Polo button down (mine is a small, runs big!), Vince pants, The Row sneaks
Khaki season baby!!!!!! Been wearing these pants on repeat too…we will talk about them more next week. A full Quiet Luxe (don’t hate me!) neighborhood errands outfit. Wore this for coffee with a friend and then straight to the Taekwondo leveling up ceremony last Thursday. :) Add in our lady bags…so beyond fashion, positively heaven. FDL shirt, Kule pants, Birkenstocks (did you see The Row made a hardware free pair!? ugh why do they have to be so good?!)
For April 25: not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket! Hehe. I’ve been enjoying wearing the blue flannel with black baggy “work pants” and chunky loafers. The extremely casual shirt feels like the balance “work pants” need when there is no corporate dress code. Uniqlo C jacket, Polo shirt, Another Tomorrow pants, Khaite loafers
And for March 25…when you do actually still need a little more of a jacket. Vintage Armani baby…was I telling you, or was I telling you!? Wore this for a business development meeting this week, felt rock solid. Polo shirt, Another Tomorrow pants, Khaite loafers, The Row bag
And for when you want to tuck…it looks sharp without feeling too blouse-y. Lots to keep in mind when tucking a flannel. Stick to your roomier bottoms, skirts with room at the waist or pants/jeans that are baggy (or sized up) so things don’t look and feel bulky at your waistline. My tried and true Citizens Gauchos have room in the waist/hips making them perfect for tucking. The big pro of tucking a flannel, as opposed to a poplin shirt, is that it lays so much softer. Once you are bloused out enough to move comfortably, the shirt lays more elegantly. No fussing here! FDL shirt, Citizens jeans, Emme Parsons belt, Khaite loafers
But also untucked, with little Venetian slippers. How to make jeans and a button down NOT feel boring for throwing on? The proportion of everything here is a bit grand in scale. And a great mix of color/texture. The two tans (shirt and shoes), the two blues (jeans and navy overcoat) all slightly oversized. And the dainty accessories make it all look sprezzatura! Undercover men’s overcoat (50% off and the most divine fabric and shape…I went on an Undercover hunt the past two weeks…it’s been fun!), FDL shirt, Citizens jeans, The Row bag, Vibi Venezia flats, Khaite sunnies
For a cocktail party! I just ordered these pants to wear to my nephew’s Bar Mitzvah in May…I was looking for a way to wear the rosette trend without feeling overly sweet. I was planning on pairing with a tan silk shirt, but maybe this instead!? If not, will be great at a fundraiser, book signing, store party, etc etc etc…insert Spring evening get together here. Especially love diamantes next to the blue plaid. Makes the whole thing feel fab. Polo shirt, Dorsey necklace, Simone Rocha pants (and HEELS, not seen…but the pants are so good with heels…I’m not going to hem them on second thought.)
With our kick flare stretch pants. Duh!!!! These are High Sport pants and I love love love them. A note to address the HS hysteria. Yes there are tons of great knit kick flares on the market and no HS doesn’t own the idea of stretch pants (or claim to.) I get lots of questions about which “dupes” I like, and the reason why I do not endorse “dupes” is not because they are a similar product, but because many companies MARKET them as a copy. High Sport is a teensy FEMALE FOUNDED company and I get really upset when huge companies take advantage of women who are doing awesome things! So, definitely buy whichever kick flare fits your budget and know that they are mostly all great. But when companies market to you as a literal copy, think twice. It’s icky. :) And there are plenty of alts! Polo shirt, CDLP tee, High Sport pants, Birkenstocks
Look! Turns out our favorite holiday skirt is FOUR SEASON. :) FDL shirt, Kuzyk tee, Patou skirt (look at this vintage alt on Etsy! And here’s a beaut), Prada shoes (here and here are good stacked heel loafer alts!)
We are ten outfits in this week, eight more to go! Having a great time? Learning something new? Inspired to try something from your OWN closet instead of midnight stress ordering from Zara? Please consider upgrading to paid. It’s $5/week. Less than two trips on the subway. It allows me to prioritize this work - to keep bringing joy and actionable tips to your inbox. Love you all. B
The vintage (looking) mix: I love the brown and silver here balancing out the casualness of the flannel and the vintage jeans. Tod’s blazer (similar alts here and here), Polo shirt, vintage Levi’s but lately loving these by Blaze and of course, the Madewells. Celine mary janes, similar here and here.
From left: $6 From Old Navy! NOT NO!, Another Polo, but mens, because they really crush this concept, NN07, also men’s but a great, calming pattern, Greg Lauren which I love so much, but if you’re the type that sees frayed hems and gets annoyed that its MORE expensive, maybe don’t look at the price tag on this one, LOL. Filson shirt in a great spring weight.
Honestly not sure how to describe this outfit, I just love it. FDL shirt, grey t-shirt, Rus skirt that has a little slip that intentionally sticks out, very fun. Old Chanel flats (but the super rounded toe of these make them an excellent alt), Mateo pearls
Lets all give a warm welcome back to my pink gingham pants, we’ve missed you in hibernation!!!!!! Polo shirt, Paco Rabanne pants (other ginghams here and here), Prada loafers
For when you want to look a little sexy…my favorite trick to not show any skin but feel like you are showing skin: the solitary button. When I put my arms down, you really can only see maybe a wisp of midriff when walking fast. :) The Row blazer, here’s a great alt to get this long boxy shape, Polo shirt, vintage Prada pants (a good alt and great pair on TRR if you’re a 4), Miu Miu shoes…but what I would buy now for the coming season is this. The sexiness! The walkability! The ease of styling!…why am I so obsessed with this shoe?
Are you using your shirts as a jacket yet? If not…here is your invitation. A great styling element. And when you have a shirt layered over a cardi, you feel like a double black diamond level stylist. Let me tell you. Lingua Franca cardigan, Polo shirt, Victoria Beckham pants which sadly are no longer avail, but look! Joseph to the rescue!, Vans, The Row bag.
I was not going to include a tights look, because they are going the way of sweaters for the season. But on Thursday, I was in midtown and you would not believe how many tights and minis I saw. I was SHOOK. So I thought, if they’re not giving up on them, I’m not either. What a great way to ditch your coat when its only 57 degrees! FDL shirt, Khaite skirt (here’s a few other great black minis, if you haven’t gotten one yet!), tights, our trusted M. Gemis, which are seasonal so won’t be up on the site again til Sept, Alaia bag
From left: Naomi Nomi, a very cool, made in NYC brand (the description of this shirt is also v. cute!), MM6 via Yoox, Buck Mason, LL Bean (for my petite ladies!), Golden Goose
Aaaaand to take us home. How I would wear it to barre class, if I could just get myself to go to barre class!!!! Polo shirt, Kule long sleeve tee, Beyond Yoga leggings, Vibi Venezia slipper shoes
And with that, I’m off to check out the new textile collection from Soane, my favorite pastime. I’m wearing the outfit in the lede.
Happy Sunday! Yours TRULY,
Becky

I wrote about dupes, and I feel so fucking heard right now. Cheering. THERE ARE PLENTY OF ALTS. Have to stop calling things dupes. And all these sites with the dupes that we feel are harmless are buying the search term "high sport" -- gives me the icks.
I love this post, so many great outfits! I bit the bullet and am absolutely in heart with my High Sport kick flares and am now even more so now knowing they are a tiny company run by ladies <3
