My daughter is going to college in Boston (from California) and I am trying to plan her jacket/coat game... how many (and what?) does she really need?!
Absolutely a warm down coat, especially since she'll probably be walking a lot and the wet cold is brutal. Might have to wait until August/Sept. for this. But have to say I must agree with the notes below, that you'll probably want to wait to see when she gets there and see the vibe. I always love a peacoat as well, classic New England fall! But she will have thoughts come October!!
I live in Massachusetts and have 3 teenagers. It's much colder here than CA (obvs--I'm so jealous!). Boston in Jan/Feb is a damp, slicing cold that, when combined with the wind that sometimes rolls in from the sea, is very unpleasant for walking around. She will want some kind of insulated, water-resistant coat for Jan/Feb/early March for walking to and from class. If she will accept hip or knee length, I'd do that. I love the Tory Burch down coat Becky showed several weeks ago. I'd pick off the big brand insignia with a seam ripper like Becky did. My teens all wear their insulated, waterproof ski jackets by Spyder in deep winter here. But they are serious skiers so that's their version of an "athletic jacket" and, sadly, I can't say it's a stylish look. At the very least, grab a chunky cropped down puffer from Uniqlo in a color she likes. It's warm, it won't break the bank, it's squishable into a backpack, and you'll know she has it if she refuses anything else right now but wakes up one very cold morning in New England. That's what I did for my daughter and it worked. I got the light sand color and it's so cute on her. Then, some kind of light, definitely waterproof rain jacket and I'd go sporty with that just so there's a chance she will wear it. We get ours (because jackets get left everywhere) from the Columbia outlet. Usually plain and navy. Congrats on college! How wonderful. And I'm sure Becky will have much better specific ideas.
Thank you! I know, easier to wait... but it’s so fun to shop for her (and she’ll probably just wear her athletic jacket instead of getting anything stylish!)
Coincidentally have been starting to actually wear my Pimlico Burberry after years of kinda not knowing how to wear it.. now I am curious about all beige and notoriously hard to style coats! Your post helps a lot!
Group question! Got the Philip Lim jacket. The style is great but … the zipper kinda sucks. It works but not very smoothly. Do you keep or return? Leaning towards keep but if anyone else made that call with a zipper or anything else and has regretted it tell me pleasssse
Gah! Such a bummer to hear, that is my favorite style in this whole list! I wonder if it just needs to be broken in a little. Like I HATED my Barbour jacket zipper for at least six months...but maybe also just cheap. Also, how do you plan to wear it? Mostly zipped or mostly unzipped? I rarely zip my jackets (though I like the option of course.)
Yeah it’s a talon zipper which I thought was a solid brand? It could just need to be broken in— good point. It definitely functions. I’d probably mostly wear it open but don’t want to be futzing around with the zipper when I do want to zip up. It looks awesome both ways, btw!
Lightning stories also annoy me. Even though I like to wear it unzipped, but if there is a problem with the zipper, every time I zip it up, I get angry. So, I would probably return it. But maybe you really need to wear it for a while.
Thinking to get the Philip Lim one but curious about the color. It looks like it has kind of a green hue, which would not be good on me. I need more neutral as I am very pale. LOVE the jacket though. Can you exchange for different one if zipper is tricky? Maybe it's just one crummy zip? Hate that!
Hi! I do think it has kind of green vs totally neutral hue as far as the world of khaki goes. The style is great! I did end up sending the original back because it went on super sale for a short period and I wanted to get it at that price. Zipper is just the same but I'm now feeling it just needs to be broken in.
Hi! Thank you.! Will see how it looks but am skeptical about color, sadly! The quest continues. I LOVE the Sportmax one Becky is wearing but can't seem to find it anywhere.
So it came and I see what you mean about the color; it is not bad at all. The zipper however is another story: kind of wonky. Works ok but the pull seems to be the issue...also, sizing? . bought a small and am a solid 4-6 but the sleeves are GINORMOUS so might exchange for an XS.
In the meantime, no signs of the Sportmax one that I can find....
Finally rec'd my XS Philip Lim and reporting that I am a sz 6 all day long with long arms and torso and it fits great! Love the color and the functionality of it with the double zipper and long sleeves. The S swam on me and felt like I was wearing a kimono (and not in a good way) on my arms. It is on sale big time at Saks, just FYI. The color is better in real life and the zipper is a bit tricky, but better than buttons IMO.
Hi Becky, Can you please link to the Sportmax one? I can't seem to find it anywhere? A couple come close but are not the one you're showing. Am I missing something??
Everyone says "You can't go wrong with a trench!". But I agree with you - they're a nuisance! And I'm either too hot or too cold.
We just say « Bash » (hi from 🇫🇷🥖)

I was just in a ba&sh store yesterday and they said "Welcome to Bash" when I walked in. It rhymes with smash.
😀🧡
Totally agree trench is not right for me right now. Dying over the sportmax!
Yes! Totally agree. Too much/heavy especially when damp.
I think you would love the AF AGGER cropped trench - another scandi brand! X

sometimes you don't know til you see it on yourself! Worth a try
I got the xs one and keeping it. It was in super sale at Saks and runs huge. The color is good -on me anyway!

I really liked the cotton twill trench coat from Skall Studio. Thank you for sharing your trench coat top with us.🧡
Love love the coach trench ♥️
